Canada’s largest national park and the first national park north of the 60th parallel, Wood Buffalo National Park was established in 1922 and expanded in 1925. Today, the park protects 44, 741 square kilometers of boreal forest, uplands and wild prairie. It is also an important cultural landscape for 11 distinct indigenous groups who have hunted and trapped in the park for centuries. Members of these Indigenous groups – First Nations and Metis people – still continue their traditional lifestyle in the park today, a powerful reminder that the park is a living cultural landscape. Parks Canada works with the leadership of its Indigenous partners to build a co-operative management framework for the park.
