Built in 1854 as a Methodist Church this building was used until the new church was built in 1900. At that time shipbuilder George Cochrane moved the building about 100 yards and used it as a sail loft. As the Age of Sail dissipated George donated the building back to the community and it was used as a community hall for about 50 years. After being privately owned for several years it was donated to the society and taken apart to be moved to the museum site (about 2 kms). The society raised the capital to put the building back together with a new foundation, entry way and a bay window and the Age of Sail Museum was born. Although for costs and maintenance reasons the outside of the building has been sided the original timbers inside are visible and the original window glass is still on the side windows. The beautiful hand hewn timbers and mortise and tendon construction can be certainly be appreciated.
